Community Read

About Community Read

This year we're continuing year 2 of our monthly 'Community Reads Family Workshops' which means all grades will engage in a shared reading experience with a specific read-aloud book. Families are invited into each classroom the last Friday of each month to explore texts on a deeper level.  Following the reading and discussion piece, students and families have the opportunity to collaborate on a grade-specific community project to build understanding around themes such as empathy, compassion, kindness, inclusion, and acceptance.

As part of our School Goals for 2019-2020, we will maintain strong links with parents and community-based organizations to prepare students for the next steps in their education. In this regard, as a school community, we will continue to work collaboratively to integrate parent involvement with our Professional Learning studies.

Our initiative last year included Monthly 'Community Read Meetings’ that served to strengthen our family relationships using whole-school reads. The process of reading and discussing a monthly book will build a shared understanding of different themes and concepts across all grade levels.

At the beginning of each month, there will be a video featuring the read-aloud of the text that be available on our school website for families to access at home. Additionally, you will see posters with our scheduled meetings displayed around the school. Starting in October, every meeting date at the end of the month will invite and engage families in an activity related to the text.

Our Community Reads were specifically chosen to provide access to as many students and families as possible, as their rich visuals, accessible print, and deep themes. We hope these meaningful activities between our teachers and families will encourage the joy and excitement of reading.
